At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Augsberger writes that he is worried because he has not heard from Ardena since a little over a week ago. He asks her to write as often as she can. He inquires if she has had any pictures taken lately, and writes, "as the British say 'get cracking' and send me some." Augsberger tells Ardena that he sent her some pictures and hopes she receives them soon. He sends his love and closes the letter.
