At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Ben begins with a drawing of three interlocking circles. He writes that they represent the people in the office. The first is for "ferocious females," the second for "4 f'ers," and the third is for the "rest of us that have become trapeze artists because we've been swinging on the bars too long."
