At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter apologizing to Senator Bruce about a debt that Ousley is unable to pay to him at this time. This is the result of a bad crop due to to some flooding from the previous year. Ousley promises to pay as soon as he can with the earnings from this years crop.
