At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter that was sent with an article from the "Republic". The author of the letter received this paper and article from J.E. Daniel, a doctor from Jackson Mississippi. The article details a boy's conduct during a yellow fever outbreak. The letter also mentions a sketch of a school in Mass. that the author went to. It is a satirical picture of the school which the author gives the Senator permission to use.
