At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"...[John Nelson] wanted to sell his Land very much, & that just now he was much pressed for money & would sell a good Bargain. He says a fine plantation or two, of the best low Grounds may be had...I would be glad to get my Lynchburgh Tobaco sent down to Richmond...I am to send down to Genl [Charles] Lee in a day or two about getting deeds for SauraTown..."
