At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He apologizes for not writing more often. He speaks briefly about Mary, the infant daughter he and Aurelia lost to cholera in October, and says that their daughter Sarah now refuses to speak at all. There have been no new storms and that both he and Aurelia have been able to put on some weight. He also talks briefly about their slaves and the Mill that he hopes to open.
