Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle Of The Wilderness-Attack at Spottsylvania Court House" dated 1865. Depicts hand-to-hand combat between Union and Confederate forces during the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864. In the center of the painting an officer on horseback rides through the battle, beside him a solider holds up the body of a wounded comrade. On the left the body of a union solider hangs overtop a cannon. Engraved from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers.
