At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Attack at Chantilly-Death of Gen. Stevens" dated 1863. Depicts the battle of Chantilly, September 1, 1862. In the forefront, a mortally wounded General Isaac Ingalls Stevens is caught by a comrade as he falls atop the body of another solider. In death General Stevens still clutches a Union flag. In the bcakground Union forces march into battle. engraved after an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
