At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Lookout Mountain" dated 1864. Depicts combat between Union and Confederate forces at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, November 24, 1863. Union soliders climb to the top of lookout Mountian towards an awaiting Confederate artillary battery. Engraved from an original painting by Thomas Nast in possession of the publishers at time of engraving.
