At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Death of General Wolfe" dated 1857. Depicts the death of General James Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec, September 13, 1759. General James Wolfe is held upright by two comrades while surrounded by concerned soliders and Native American warriors. In the background the battle continues. Engraved after an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers.
