At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Interview Between General Jackson & Weatherford" circa 1861-1877. Depicts General Andrew Jackson and William Weatherford speaking inside a spacious tent. Jackson appears relaxed, seated at a small table while Weatherford stands near the opening of the tent. A solider stands guard outside. Engraved by W. Ridgeway after a painting by John Reuben Chapin.
