At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Death of Captain Lawrence" dated 1856. Depicts battle between United States and British forces onboard the United States frigate, Chesapeak during the War of 1812. A mortally wounded Captain James Lawrence is carried by three sailors. Caption notes, "don't give up the ship." Engraved by H.B. Hall after a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Painting was in possession of publishers at time of engraving.
