At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle Between the Contitution and the Guerriere" dated 1866. Depicts a close of view of the naval battle of August 19, 1812 between the USS Constitution and the HMS Guerriere. The HMS Guerriere appears defeated, French sailors struggle to stay afloat atop Guerriere's sinking mast. Engraved by James D. Smillie after a painting by Alonzo Chappel. Original painting in possession of publishers at time of engraving.
