Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports the results of the 1860 Presidential election, announcing Abraham Lincoln as President and Hannibal Hamlin as Vice President. States "Our returns indicate, however, that the next Congress will be in opposition to the republicans." Includes a report that the secession movement action of South Carolina's legislature will be postponed until the following day. Contains a detailed report regarding the election in each New York voting quarter.
