At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Undated woodcut cartoon attacking Freedmen's Bureau and freed blacks. Supposed tour boat "excursion" on the "Radical Demigog" up "Salt River." Contains an image of a black man rowing a boat full of others participating in the "excursion." Includes remarks printed underneath the image describing the facetious excursion in a racist and sarcastic way.
