At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inside the newspaper there is a large color map of the railroads of the Eastern United States as well as a smaller map of the railroads of Texas and the harbor in Pensacola, Florida. The map is the size of the entire newspaper folded out. Published at 164 Broadway in New York (it is a weekly publication and costs 25 cents). Front page is filled with an article titled "An Historical and Descriptive Sketch of all Places of all Places of Interests in the Southern States." A paragraph is provided for several dozen places. Pages 2, 3, and part of 4 consists of schedules for 304 railroad lines. Part of page 4 has various advertisements. Fraying at the edges and the front page has some staining. The newspaper is folded in half and there has been some damage at the fold.
