At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He writes that he is very well and has recently seen Miss Hatteras but has not been down to see Miss Harrison. He has heard the 9th Army Corps has gone out in New [illegible but looks like York] to the Western Department but he does not know if they've left yet.
