A personal letter to his cousin in the Brookfield township region of upstate New York. Describes an attack on President Andrew Johnson in Indianapolis on or about 10 September 1866, and a subsequent melee. "The president... retired in disgust. As soon as he got inside, a shot fired at him, the ball passing within two feet of Genl Grant's head."
