At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks MacNeven for a book on Irish history. Comparing the U.S. to Ireland, he writes: "In this the United States may see what would have been their history had they continued under the same masters. Heaven seems to have provided them as an asylum before the extinguishment of all political morality had prepared the scenes now acting in the world." Written in third person with signature in text.
