At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First edition. Quarto. With 17 engraved plates (some folding). Printed by I. and J. Taylor. Fulton's first important work. Fulton used this book to gain public recognition and indisputable credentials as an engineer. His plans and improvements for the Peak Forest canal in Manchester convinced the canal company to pay the cost of printing 200 copies of Fulton's book. Bound in original marble boards.
