At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A Confederate general admits Union victory was "an incommensurable blessing to the whole country and especially to the people of the South. The consequences would have been continual wars, standing armies, fortifications on every frontier and military borders such as the European nations have to bear...." Apparently a manuscript or letter fragment.
