Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The envelope has a image of a tree where all the branches end in a Union flag, with the abreviation of all the states below them. There is also the word Union across the top colored to look like a flag. The caption reads "Traitor I spare that Tree, Cleave not a single bough In youth it shelter'd me, And I'll protect it now"
