Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by several New York officers and endorsed by prominent Union generals Joseph Bartlett, John Newton, Winfield S. Hancock, and Henry W. Slocum, among others. Seeks to institute policy changes in order to fill the ranks for New York regiments. Includes two pages of regiment statistics. Lieutenant Colonel Adams was the first signed among the New York officers.
