Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John updates Jesse on the spasm in his mare's leg, which John [another with the same name] has been trying to cure. He read in the paper that there was another battle in Kentucky. John tells Joseph that their mother is working on a box to send them and is knitting "you all a pair of socks a pese [piece]."
