At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed book with manuscript annotations indicating classified code words. The book lists code words for telegraphs, the actual words they correspond to are written by hand. Book was printed for the years "1861 & '62" but contains note on the cover page reading "O.C. Hatton, Cumb Gap Tenn Feb 20th 1865." Annotations in the text could be from any time between the book's publishing and the end of the war. Book printed by Stenger, annotations possibly by Hatton.
