Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate occupation newspaper. Article concerning Confederate generals Johnston, Pemberton, and President Davis describes them as a crew of mercenaries and parasites of the Confederate government; General Johnston is responsible for the fall of Vicksburg. "Alfred Neafie" noted in red ink on each corner. Wallpaper has blue-gray floral pattern with green and purple highlights.
