At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Announces that all the Confederate forces in the states east of the Mississippi River have been surrendered to the United States and that the armies of Generals Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, and Richard Taylor are prisoners of war. States that the surrender of the Confederate forces in the states west of the Mississippi River must soon be made. Advises citizens not to form groups of military resistance as it will only result in further devastation.
