Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

From Northern newspapers, reports on Ulysses Grant's campaign against Richmond. News item predicts that Wilmington, North Carolina will soon be attacked. 3 column report from the Whig's own correspondant on "The Seven Months' Campaign against Richmond Considered as a Whole." Update on affairs in Missouri. News of a free black, age 14, killed when he fell attempting to "steal a ride on the Camp Lee train." Short mention of 2 Confederate soliders trying to desert to Union lines. Call for a day of public worship by President Jefferson Davis. Several police items involving soldiers and blacks, including a report of 2 slaves poisoning 6 white children. A mock conversation on "The Yankee Slave Trade."
