At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An editorial titled "Thoughts" discusses the recent request by Jefferson Davis for a day of fasting and prayer. A long obituary for "Col. Oliver Evans Edwards" gives a lengthy biography as a lawyer, legislative member, and heroism in war. An article titled "Dedication" reports a spiritual jubilee in Orangeburg and the dedication of a new Baptist church there. "Divine Tokens" teaches the ways of God and his economy of grace, in particular application to the war. "Notes on the Times" criticiztes Abraham LIncoln's uncivilized warfare and mentions developments in Mississippi and Virginia, amongst other places.
