"Domestic Mission Board -- Its Work and Responsibilities" lists four areas of importance as the cultivation of the domestic field, the army, The Indian Department, and Bible Distributions. A letter to the editor title "James the Least" examines the role of James the Apostle, and another letter describes the "Union of Columbia, Bethel, and Salem Baptist Associations" as a means of consolidation. "The Lesson of the Times" calls Republicanism a failure, following Europe's example. Minutes from the "Baptist State Convention of South Carolina" are included. "Secular News" includes both domestic and international news. International news includes Mexico coming under the rule of France; domestic news includes blockade runners, a Union raid of the railroad at Weldon, and Union attacks on Charleston, amongst other items.
