Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This issue contains two war poems on the front page, with a short message about the spirit of liberty. An editorial pins God with certain sides of war. Small news briefs list people running for local office, town decrees, and local meetings, such as the Mechanics' Guard of Salisbury. A proclamation of North Carolina Governor John W. Ellis is printed.
