At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Kentucky Feud, Correspondence Between State & Confederate Authorities.
Correspondence between Kentucky state officials and Confederate leaders is printed here, with letters describing the relationship between Tennessee and Kentucky. Two articles describe the seizure of shipments including sugar, salt, and clothing, in effort to protect against speculation, while another article examines domestic manufacture and another suggests substitutes for coffee.
