At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This issue's front page is the same as the previous issue, with the addition of ads in the right column. Several reactions to the elections discuss Union and anti-Union sentiments in Kentucky. The Journal prints a competing paper's intention not to publish on Monday to allow employees to maintain Sabbath worship, and the Journal decides to follow all other national papers in publishing a Monday paper. The last page contains stories.
