At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"An Intercepted Document -- The African Slave Trade," reprinted from the New York Herald, describes a document addressed to the Confederate Commissioner at St. Petersburg, L.Q.C. Lamar, from the Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin. The article praises the Confederate states for leaving decisions about the African slave trade and slavery to the independent States.
