At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Latest Federal Reports From the River," reprinted from the Chicago Times, describes events on the Tallahatchie river. "Northern News" mentions issues of personal liberty in the Union, former President Franklin Pierce, and General Butler's visit to New York. "Foreign News" includes a report on "The Confederate Loan in England" reprinted from the London Globe.
