At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints a report written by Lieutentant-Commander R.C. Blake to Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, entitled "Destruction of the Hatteras -- Reports of Her Commander." "Correspondence Between Gov. Brown and Gen. Mercer on Returning the Militia to their Homes" features letters written between Brigadier General H. W. Mercer and Governor Joseph E. Brown of Georgia. Includes articles entitled "Reports of the Battle of Shiloh" and "Hooker's Army."
