At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This newspaper is from the Southern Confederacy and includes articles on the "Destruction of the Federal Gunboat Cairo", Casualties reported by the 19th Georgia Regiment from the Battle of Fredericksburg, and "A Proclamation by the President of the Confederate States". There are also short dispatches from around the area concerning Union troop movements.
