At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Yankee News" features multiple excerpts from northern newspapers commenting on the Confederate army's movements, mentions General Bragg, Kirby Smith, and Brigadier General Stanley, among others. "Robbing the Wounded" accuses Gen. Jerry T. Boyle of Kentucky of reappropriating funds intended to help wounded Confederate soldiers for the care of Yankee soldiers. Headline Date is Misprinted as December 8. Includes a list of "Georgians Buried near Newmarket, Virginia", accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
