At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter describing the Battle of Corinth is printed under the title: "Our Special Correspondence from Holly Springs. Full and Highly Interesting Particulars of the Late Battles at Corinth." "The Corinth Battle" provides a Confederate perspective on the outcome of the battle. Also includes a printing of a speech given in the House of Representatives by E.M. Bruce of Kentucky, on the financial policies of the government. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
