At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article reprinted from the Chattanooga Rebel, "General Buckner's Address to the People of Kentucky", is addressed to "the Freemen of Kentucky" from Major General S. B. Buckner. "Yankee Account of the Battle of Corinth" features excerpts from the New York Herald celebrating a Union victory at Corinth. Other war related news articles include: "News From McClellan's Army," "General Lee's Address to his Army," and "Official Report of General Lee." Also includes other accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements and local news.
