At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reprints "The Official Report of Gen. Pope--His Excuses for His Defeat"; caption reads "As a prominent feature in the history of this war, we give Pope's official report of the battles of Manassas. It is pregnant with lies". Other articles include: "The Surrender of Harper's Ferry--Battle in Maryland," and "Battle of Maryland;" both reprints from the Richmond Enquirer, and "Defenses on the Red River." Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, local news, and a printing of a soldier's letter to his family ("Letter from Soldier JIm").
