At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Position of the Union Cause" features excerpts from an article originally printed in the New York Times, which describes the failures of the Union Army in recent campains. "Riot in New York Regiment" reports on a mutiny of the 53rd New York regiment of the Union Army. Other articles include: "Affairs in New Orleans--The Town Becoming too Hot for Picayune," "Incidents at Frederick," and "Letter from Murfreesboro'--The Federals Leave Nashville & Return." Lists members of the 13th Regiment of Georgia killed and wounded in battle, occupying 2 columns on the second page. Includes accounts of troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
