At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Article titled "The Emancipation Scheme Recommended by Lincoln", described as an "interview between President Lincoln and the border state Congressmen -- Mr. Lincoln makes a speech and appeals to them to pass the measure -- reply of the congressmen -- a majority and minority report." Majority Report written July 1, 1862, authored by the Representatives from the border states with C.A. Wickliffe as chairman. Minority report written July 15, 1862. Also includes a response by Horace Maynard written July 16, 1862. Also prints "Complete Correspondence between Lincoln and the Border State Men." Includes advertisements, troop movements, and local news.
