At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article titled "European Intervention" reports that European recognition, let alone intervention, is unlikely. Another article, "Letter from General Butler Explaining his Order Concerning the Ladies of New Orleans" berates General Benjamin F. Butler for an order relating to prostitution. Other articles include: "Effect of the News of McClellan's Defeat in St. Louis" and "Condition of General McClellan's Army -- Views of Gens. Porter and Marcy." Includes accounts of proceedings in the U.S. Senate, troop movements and battle reports, advertisements, and local news.
