Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses his editorial entitled "The People's Constitution" (see GLC05757.01) and requests that they print it on Friday. Ends with patriotic fervor: "But every man must be true to the Constitution. There must be no compromise." A note at the bottom asks to be remembered to Low & Millard. Millard, Low, & Miller published the Daily Express. Dorr, then an illegitimate governor, led the Dorr Rebellion over suffrage rights in Rhode Island.
