At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: No boats because insurance companies wouldn't cover. Temperature was dull. No boats arrived in 2 weeks that meant no mail. Describes a huge ice blockade, which covered a whole town. Talks a little about a senator from Seattle, and that lot ships were coming in.
