At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Response to Kohl's solicitation letter. Olivia de Havilland writes that she cannot adequately describe her religious views at this time because her life is too demanding to afford her the necessary time for reflection. She does add, however, that she has a strong faith in a universal, benevolent power and the efficacy of prayer.
