At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

MacVeagh begins by asserting that virtually every question affecting one's life is a moral question and states that no one is ever really in doubt about whether or not a particular "line of conduct" was right or wrong. He suggests that if one did have any doubts, they should turn to the "sayings of the Lord" for guidance.
