At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Atkins writes to Sanders from prison while serving time for her part in the Tate-LaBianca murders committed while a member of the Manson family. Atkins continues a previous letter (GLC05508.024.01), commenting that she feels a connection with her correspondent and makes tentative plans for a visit. She responds to questions about prison work, her religious faith, and drugs in prison. She discusses her guilt and remorse, as they relate to her Christian beliefs.
