At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Note explains letter in GLC05503.01. Writes that he corresponded with Thomas Sully in 1853 in regard to a portrait of his wife. States that Sully gave him prices: head $80, bust $100, kit kat $200, half length $600. Mentions that in 1855 he corresponded with Sully about a portrait of Commodore James Lawrence by Gilbert Stuart that had come into his possession and Sully sent a reply (see GLC05503.01).
